TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued positive agricultural recommendations based on the projected 2025 rainfall patterns, which are expected to be normal to above normal.
“These conditions are ideal for boosting food crop productivity in food production centers,” BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati said during a press conference on Monday, November 4, 2024.
However, Dwikorita cautioned that areas projected to experience below-normal rainfall should implement proactive measures, such as adjusting planting patterns and selecting suitable crop varieties.
By intensifying efforts such as irrigation and other support systems, even regions with below-normal rainfall can achieve significant food crop yields, she added.
For areas anticipating above-normal rainfall, the BMKG advises preparedness for extreme hydrometeorological events, including floods, flash floods, and landslides, particularly during the peak rainy season.
Additionally, regions facing potential below-normal rainfall should be vigilant against drought conditions.
Agricultural managers are also urged to anticipate forest and land fires during the upcoming dry season. Furthermore, the operational readiness of reservoirs, retention basins, and other water infrastructure must be ensured to effectively manage both excessive rainfall and water scarcity.
“The key point during the rainy season is to optimize drainage systems and water storage during the rainy season is crucial for efficient water utilization,” Dwikorita emphasized.
Rainfall Patterns in 2025
BMKG has forecasted a normal rainfall pattern for 2025, with annual rainfall ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 millimeters.
A significant portion of Indonesia, approximately 67%, will experience annual rainfall exceeding 2,500 millimeters. Most parts of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, western Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, northern Lampung, Banten, West Java, western Central Java, Kalimantan, central and southern Sulawesi, Bali, Maluku, and Papua are included in this category.
Approximately 15% of the country is expected to receive above-normal rainfall, including parts of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, East Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua.
Conversely, a small portion of Indonesia, less than 1%, is projected to experience below-normal rainfall, primarily in parts of western South Sumatra, East Nusa Tenggara, North Maluku, and the northern part of West Papua.
