TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, said an earthquake jolted Aceh Besar Regency and its surrounding areas on Sunday night, October 20, 2024, at 11:13 p.m. Jakarta time.
According to the agency, the 4.8-magnitude earthquake was centered in the sea, 126 kilometers southwest of Sabang City, at a 7-kilometer depth.
"The shallow earthquake was caused by the activity of the Great Sumatra Fault in the West-Andaman segment," said Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, in a statement shared after the earthquake on Monday, October 21.
Based on the reports from residents of Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar, the quake was felt at II MMI scale, meaning some people inside their homes experienced the tremor and some light-hanging objects swayed.
BMKG stated that there were no reports of damage due to the earthquake. Likewise, no aftershocks were observed.
Throughout Sunday, coinciding with the inauguration of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, BMKG recorded six felt earthquakes hitting various regions of the country.
At 01:07 a.m., a 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit Parigi Moutong and Toli-Toli in Central Sulawesi. The tremor was experienced with an intensity of III MMI, akin to trucks passing by. Berau in East Kalimantan also trembled due to the same earthquake centered in the sea, 103 kilometers northeast of Donggala, Central Sulawesi.
At 12:24 p.m., Parigi Moutong was again shaken by a 4.8-magnitude earthquake, centered at sea, 37 kilometers southeast of Parigi Moutong.
In the afternoon, Sorong in West Papua was also jolted by an earthquake with a 4.1 magnitude. Occurring at 03:22 p.m., the tremor was experienced at an intensity of III MMI, with an epicenter also in the sea, 49 kilometers northeast of Sorong.
At 04:14 p.m., a 2.6-magnitude earthquake shook Garut Regency, West Java, on the II MMI scale. This time the quake was centered on land, 21 kilometers southwest of the Garut Regency.
Lastly, at 05:43 p.m., Limau in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, was also shaken by a 3.6-magnitude earthquake. BMKG reported that the tremor was centered at sea, 24 kilometers southeast of Tanggamus.
