TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions of Indonesia from January 21 to 27, 2025. This heightened rainfall potential stems from various factors.
“This condition increases the risk of hydrometeorological disasters, including floods, landslides, and fallen trees,” the agency said on its official Instagram account @infobmkg on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
According to the BMKG, the active Asian Monsoon winds, persisting until the end of February 2025, and the ongoing weak La Niña phenomenon, projected to continue until mid-2025, are contributing to the increased rainfall. Furthermore, the passage of atmospheric waves, such as Rossby and Kelvin waves, across the Indonesian region in the coming week will further enhance the formation of widespread rain clouds.
The agency also observed that the Equatorial Rossby Wave is propagating westward across the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra Island, extending southwards to East Nusa Tenggara. This wave influences a broad swathe of Indonesia, including most of Sumatra Island, the Riau Islands, the Natuna Sea, Bangka Belitung, the Java Sea, Java Island, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, the Flores Sea, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, the Flores Sea, the Banda Sea, Maluku, North Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, Papua, and Papua Pegunungan.
Concurrently, Kelvin Waves are propagating eastward in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the Arafura Sea, and South Papua. “OLR (Outgoing Longwave Radiation) analysis also shows negative values, so that the potential for rain is increasingly significant,” the BMKG reported.
In addition, cyclonic circulation is observed in the waters west of Aceh, the Karimata Strait, and the East Nusa Tenggara-Timor Sea, further influencing the dynamics of the Indonesian atmosphere, particularly in the Sumatra and Nusa Tenggara regions in the next few days.
The agency identified other convergence areas extending from the western waters of Bengkulu to southern Java, from the northern waters of Papua to North Sulawesi, in the northern waters of the Papua Islands, and from Central Papua to Papua New Guinea. Additionally, wind confluence areas are being monitored in central and southern Sumatra, the west coast of Sumatra, western Java, and the southern waters of Java.
“These conditions can increase the potential for rain cloud growth and sea wave heights around the cyclonic circulation area and along the convergence/confluence area,” the BMKG emphasized.
Furthermore, the BMKG noted that atmospheric conditions exhibit strong lability, supporting convective processes on a local scale in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, the Riau Islands, Jambi, the Bangka Belitung Islands, Central Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, and most of the Papua Islands.
