TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of high waves that may occur in several Indonesian waters on November 23-24, 2024.

BMKG forecaster Ryan Putra Pambudi said the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves from northeast to east at a speed ranging from 8 to 30 knots, while in the southern part of Indonesia, it generally moves from east to southeast at a speed ranging from 8 to 30 knots.

"The highest wind speeds have been observed in the western Indian Ocean of the Nias Islands - western Bengkulu Indian Ocean," Ryan said in a written statement on Saturday, November 23, 2024.

This condition has caused waves to rise to a height of 1.25 - 2.5 meters, likely to occur in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the western Indian Ocean of Nias Islands, western Indian Ocean of Lampung, southern Indian Ocean of Banten, southern Indian Ocean of West Java, southern Indian Ocean of Central Java, southern Indian Ocean of DI Yogyakarta, southern Indian Ocean of East Java, southern Indian Ocean of Bali, southern Indian Ocean of West Nusa Tenggara, and southern Indian Ocean of East Nusa Tenggara.

Similar waves are likely to occur in the North Natuna Sea, the eastern part of the Sulawesi Sea, the Maluku Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean of Maluku, the northern Pacific Ocean of Southwest Papua, and the northern Pacific Ocean of West Papua.

Meanwhile, higher waves in the range of 2.5 - 4.0 meters are likely to occur in the western Indian Ocean of Aceh, the Mentawai Islands, and Bengkulu. "The potential for high waves in several areas may pose risks to maritime safety," he said.

BMKG urges the public to be vigilant at all times, especially fishermen who use transportation such as fishing boats to avoid wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave heights of more than 1.25 meters.

BMKG also advises barges to avoid wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave heights of more than 1.5 meters. For ferries, BMKG advises to avoid wind speeds of more than 21 knots and wave heights of more than 2.5 meters.

"For large vessels such as cargo ships and cruise ships, it is necessary to avoid wind speeds of more than 27 knots and wave heights of more than 4.0 meters," he said.
