TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a warning about the possible formation of a tropical cyclone in southern Indonesia. According to BMKG monitoring, a tropical cyclone may form in southern waters from November 2025 to February 2026.
The BMKG has urged the government and the public to be cautious of the possibility of a tropical cyclone emerging, similar to the one that hit Sumatra at the end of last month. The head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, conveyed this message during a meeting with House Commission V (DPR) at the DPR/MPR Building in Jakarta on Monday, December 1, 2025.
Faisal mentioned that the potential emergence of a tropical cyclone seed is the most important information he conveyed during the meeting. "During the period from November to February, there is a threat of the occurrence or formation of a cyclone seed in the southern waters of Indonesia," said Faisal.
Faisal revealed several areas that could potentially be affected by a tropical cyclone. These include Bengkulu, the southern part of Sumatra, the southern part of Java Island, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, as well as Central and South Papua.
According to Faisal, these areas face the threat of the formation of a cyclone seed that could develop into a tropical cyclone. "Certainly, there will be a threat of high rainfall, hydrometeorological disasters, and also high waves," he said.
The head of BMKG stated that cyclones do not frequently occur in equatorial regions like Indonesia. However, he indicated that Indonesia must be prepared for the possibility of such disasters.
Faisal commented that tropical cyclone disasters could hurt densely populated areas or provinces. "It's time for Indonesia to be prepared to face tropical cyclone disasters, not just the hydrometeorological disasters that we have been familiar with," said Faisal.
BMKG reported that Indonesia has experienced 4 tropical cyclones in the last 24 years. These include Tropical Cyclone Cempaka, which occurred in the waters south of Java, specifically in Yogyakarta, in 2017. In addition, in 2021, Tropical Cyclone Seroja occurred in the waters of East Nusa Tenggara.
Furthermore, Indonesia also faced Tropical Cyclone Senyar in 2001. The same cyclone then formed at the end of last November, causing disasters in Sumatra.
The tropical cyclone in Sumatra at the end of last month caused floods and landslides in three provinces. The number of casualties from the disaster continues to rise. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) updated its search operation findings on Sunday night, November 30, 2025.
The disaster occurred in three provinces of Sumatra, namely Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The head of BNPB, Lieutenant General Suharyanto, stated that North Sumatra was the most severely affected area. "Compared to North Sumatra and Aceh, which have already started to recover on this third day, especially now that there is no more rain," said Suharyanto in an online press conference on Sunday night.
BNPB recorded the number of deaths until Sunday night as 442 people from the three affected provinces, while the number of missing persons is recorded as 402 individuals.
