TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - It has been raining non-stop since Saturday evening until Sunday morning, January 17-18, 2026, across most of the Greater Jakarta area. This weather has caused river levels to rise, and several floodgates in Jakarta have reported a dangerous alert status this morning.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), rainy weather is likely to persist throughout today. However, the intensity of the rainfall will not be as high as yesterday—some of which was higher in intensity and accompanied by lightning.
As quoted from its website, the BMKG stated that light rain has the potential to fall evenly across Jakarta today. Rain around Jakarta is also expected to be light in intensity, and even then, it will be patchy, as some areas are predicted to be cloudy, particularly in Bekasi City and Tangerang City.
However, today is still within the BMKG's early warning period for heavy to very heavy rain for Jakarta and its surrounding areas. The BMKG has issued a warning for January 16-18.
According to the BMKG, the potential for increased rainfall is influenced by, among other things, a cold surge from Asia, the cyclone seed 96S in the Indian Ocean south of East Java, and a weak La Nina.
