TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a warning on Wednesday, October 23, regarding Tropical Cyclone Trami in the Philippine Sea. Located approximately 1,240 kilometers north of Tahuna, Trami had a maximum wind speed of 40 knots (75 kilometers/hour) and a minimum air pressure of 990 hPa, moving northwest.
The agency predicted that Trami's maximum wind speed would intensify to category 2 within the next 24 hours, continuing its northwestward trajectory away from Indonesian territory.
The cyclone is creating a region of wind speed slackening or convergence stretching across the Andaman Sea, the North Natuna Sea, the Sulawesi Sea, the Philippine Sea, Lampung, South Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, and the Papua Highlands.
Additionally, the wind convergence zone is observed in the Western Indian Ocean near Bengkulu, the North Natuna Sea, and the northern Pacific Ocean of North Maluku. “These conditions can increase the likelihood of cloud growth along the convergence or convergence zones,” said forecaster Kania Mustikawati.
Trami's indirect impacts include strong winds exceeding 25 knots on the east coast of North Kalimantan, the east coast of East Kalimantan, the northern part of the Makassar Strait, North Sulawesi, and North Maluku.
Furthermore, the cyclone is triggering sea waves measuring 1.25 - 2.5 meters (moderate sea) in the northern part of the Makassar Strait - Sulawesi Sea, the waters of Sangihe Islands to Talaud Islands, the waters of Sitaro Islands to Bitung - North Maluku Sea, the western and northern waters of Halmahera - Halmahera Sea, and the northern Pacific Ocean of West Papua.
Sea waves with heights of 2.5-4.0 meters (rough sea) are expected to occur in the northern Pacific Ocean of Halmahera.
Surface wind predictions in Indonesian waters generally indicate south and west winds ranging from 10-40 km per hour. Air temperatures are expected to range from 16-36 degrees Celsius with air humidity ranging from 43 to 99 percent.
“Residents should be cautious of the potential for tidal floods on the coast of Jakarta and Central Java," Kania warned.
