TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested two Thai citizens for smuggling crystal methamphetamine. The two foreign citizens with the initials BP and CN were arrested when they arrived at Terminal 2F of Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
BNN Eradication Deputy I Wayan Sugiri said the crystal methamphetamine was smuggled by inserting it into the internal organs, namely the vagina and rectum. Wayan said the two perpetrators were suspected of being drug couriers based on profiling by Soekarno-Hatta Airport Customs.
"After being examined, the Customs team found crystal methamphetamine packed in small packages and smuggled by swallowing it, then some were inserted into the rectum and vagina," Wayan said at a press conference at the BNN office, Cawang, East Jakarta, Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Wayan said the two smuggling perpetrators operated on the orders of an Indonesian citizen in Thailand. He said he had pocketed the identity of the mastermind behind the smuggling. Currently, the BNN and the police have coordinated to pursue the perpetrator. "We are hunting down the perpetrator who is the driving force behind this cross-border drug distribution," he said.
The crystal methamphetamine was supposed to be received by an Indonesian citizen with the initials R in South Tangerang, Banten. The prospective recipient was also arrested at a hotel in South Tangerang, a day after the crystal methamphetamine smuggling was uncovered. "The recipient with the initials R will receive the crystal methamphetamine on the orders of an inmate at Cipinang Prison with the initials J," said Wayan.
Wayan believes the inmate played a role as the party who would distribute the crystal methamphetamine from within the prison. He said the inmate has also been transferred for further investigation.
Head of Soekarno-Hatta Airport Customs Gatot Wibowo explained that the perpetrator with the initials BP smuggled 636 grams of crystal methamphetamine. The crystal methamphetamine was wrapped in special packaging. Gatot said that of that amount, 36 packages were swallowed by the perpetrator, then 1 package was smuggled in the vagina and 9 packages were stored in the anus.
As for the perpetrator with the initials CF, officers found 333.19 grams of crystal methamphetamine which was broken into 10 packages. Nine packages were stored in the anus and one package was hidden in the vagina.
According to Gatot, smuggling in this way is an old method. He said the perpetrators were difficult to detect without profiling by officers. Because, he said, it requires in-depth examination by conducting an X-ray examination.
