TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has installed sirens and warning signs for the eruption of Mount Ibu in six villages in West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province.
"The device will sound if something happens related to the volcanic activity," said Deputy for Systems and Strategy of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Raditya Jati, Sunday, January 19, 2025, as quoted by Antara.
Raditya said the sirens and warning signs were installed in six villages in Tabaru District, namely Sangaji Nyeku Village, Soa Sangaji Village, Tuguis Village, Tugureba Sungi and Borona Village. "The six villages are in the red zone prone to the eruption of Mount Ibu," he said.
The installation of the warning signs, said Raditya, is so that residents are aware of the prohibition of carrying out activities in the red zone of the eruption of Mount Ibu. The installed sirens will be connected to the sensor device installed upstream around Mount Ibu.
The West Halmahera Regency Government has set the status of Emergency Response for the Eruption of Mount Ibu for 14 days starting from January 15, 2024. The determination follows the increase in the status of Mount Ibu to level IV or Alert.
The community around Mount Ibu and visitors are asked not to carry out activities within a radius of 5 kilometers and a sectoral expansion of 6 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of the active crater of Mount Ibu. "If ash rain occurs, people who are active outside the home are advised to wear masks and glasses to avoid exposure to volcanic ash," said Raditya.
