TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of casualties due to flash floods and landslides in several areas of Sumatra continues to climb. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) updated its search operation findings on Sunday night, November 30, 2025.
The disaster occurred across three provinces of Sumatra: Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The head of BNPB, Lieutenant General Suharyanto, noted that North Sumatra is the most severely affected area. "Compared to West Sumatra and Aceh, which have already recovered more by the third day, especially as there is no longer any rain," Suharyanto said in an online press conference on Sunday night.
Suharyanto stated that BNPB has recorded the current death toll at 442 people from the three affected provinces, while the number of missing individuals is currently recorded at 402.
Casualty Breakdown by Province
Suharyanto also provided a detailed breakdown of casualties by province. The most substantial number of fatalities occurred in North Sumatra, with 217 deaths and 209 missing individuals.
Concurrently, in West Sumatra, at least 129 people were reported dead, while 118 others remain unaccounted for. In Aceh, BNPB recorded the death toll at 96 people, with 75 others missing.
Government Response and Recovery
The disaster in Sumatra also caused residents to evacuate. The government has prepared temporary shelters for the victims of flash floods and landslides in Sumatra.
The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, mentioned that the government is currently focused on completing the emergency response operation. "Simultaneously with the emergency response, we have also begun planning for rehabilitation and reconstruction," Pratikno said from North Sumatra in an online broadcast press conference on Sunday, November 30, 2025.
The rehabilitation and reconstruction process, according to Pratikno, includes the construction of temporary shelters. In addition, the process of building and repairing permanent houses will also be carried out.
Pratikno hopes to quickly start the rebuilding process in the disaster-affected areas. "We want the emergency response to be completed soon and for the rehabilitation-reconstruction phase to commence as quickly as possible, so that the community can quickly recover, resume their activities as usual, and be more resilient in facing future disasters," he stated.
Pratikno stated that the impact of extreme weather in Sumatra caused by Tropical Cyclone Senyar is extraordinary. Therefore, he promised that the government will work hard to assist the community.
