BPJPH Ensures US Products in Indonesia to Carry Dual Halal Labels

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH) ensures that every product from the United States entering Indonesia will carry two halal labels simultaneously. These markings consist of the halal labels from both the United States and Indonesia.

The agency affirmed that halal labeling remains mandatory following the trade agreement between Indonesia and the United States, which was finalized last week in Washington, D.C. "So the American halal label will coexist with our halal label," said Head of BPJPH Ahmad Haikal Hasan in a written statement on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

According to him, the provisions for halal labels between Indonesia and the United States are stipulated in the Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA). The MRA is a form of recognition of halal standards between BPJPH and Foreign Halal Certification Bodies (LHLN) in the United States.

Haikal explained that once halal authorities in the United States have issued a halal label, Indonesia no longer needs to re-examine the halal status of the product. "Only registration is required; it is no longer processed from the beginning," he said.

This mechanism also applies to other countries that have established an MRA with Indonesia. "It must be noted that this is not only happening for the United States," he said.

Thus, Haikal urged the public not to doubt American products entering Indonesia following the trade tariff agreement. "If you shop carefully, you will find halal products made in America that are recognized by Indonesia's halal authorities. There is an American halal label and also a halal label from Indonesia. It is safe," said Haikal.

Indonesia and the United States officially signed a reciprocal trade agreement in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, February 19, 2026. The trade agreement covers import tariffs and the removal of trade barriers.

Following this agreement, Indonesia granted halal certification exceptions for a number of U.S. products entering the country, including cosmetics, medical devices, and manufactured goods. However, cosmetic and medical device products still need to obtain marketing authorization from the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) before they can be marketed in Indonesia.
