TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - BPJS Ketenagakerjaan ensures that it will provide death benefits and education scholarships to Nurhayati's two children, a migrant worker who was killed in Malaysia, as a form of protection for active participants in the BPJS program.
Ni Ketut Nurhayati, an Indonesian Migrant Worker (PMI) from Gitgit Village, Sukasada District, Buleleng, died tragically in Malaysia. The 38-year-old woman is suspected of being a victim of violence before being declared dead. News of Nurhayati's passing went viral on social media, one of which was through an upload by her relative, Srimulyani Devi, who asked for donations for the repatriation process.
This tragedy is a serious concern, not only for the victim's family but also for the government and related parties.
Head of the Buleleng BPJS Ketenagakerjaan Branch, Nelson Hasudungan, revealed that Nurhayati had been registered as a BPJS participant because her departure was through an official distributor. With her status as an active participant, the victim's heirs are entitled to receive death benefits and education scholarships for her children.
Quoted from the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan page, although Nelson did not specify the amount of compensation that would be given, he explained that the education scholarship for Nurhayati's children would be adjusted to their level of education. For kindergarten and elementary school levels, the scholarship is given at Rp1.5 million per year for each child, junior high school Rp2 million per year, high school Rp3 million per year, and college Rp12 million per year.
Meanwhile, reporting from Bpjsketenagakerjaan.go.id, the Acting Head of the Buleleng Manpower Office (Disnaker), Made Juartawan, stated that his party would coordinate with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan and related agencies to accelerate the disbursement of compensation. The funds are greatly needed by the victim's family, especially for the funeral procession.
"Considering that these funds will be used for ceremonies and other needs, we hope that the disbursement can be carried out as soon as possible," explained Made Juartawan on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
The case that befell Nurhayati is a reminder of the importance of protection for migrant workers, especially those who work through official channels. The BPJS Ketenagakerjaan program not only protects migrant workers from work risks, but also guarantees their rights and those of their families in facing difficult situations such as work accidents or death.
The compensation given to Nurhayati's family includes various benefits, including financial compensation and educational support for the victim's children. This shows the important role of BPJS Ketenagakerjaan in ensuring the welfare of migrant workers and their families.
In addition to compensation from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, the community also showed solidarity by raising funds to repatriate Nurhayati's body to their homeland. This support is a form of shared concern for the fate of migrant workers who face great risks for their families.
It is known that the body of Ni Ketut Nurhayati, a migrant worker from Buleleng who was killed in Malaysia, has arrived at the funeral home located in Gitgit Village, Sukasada District, Buleleng, Bali, on Wednesday afternoon, January 8, 2025.
This tragedy provides a valuable lesson about the importance of protection for migrant workers, both through government policies and social support. With the guarantee of protection such as that provided by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, it is hoped that migrant workers can work more safely and peacefully, while their families still receive proper protection.
