TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Principal Researcher at the Climate and Atmospheric Research Center of the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin, confirmed that the cyclone seedling 96S previously detected in the Indonesian region has developed into Tropical Cyclone Zelia. Its wind speed has reached 95 kilometers per hour, which is classified as category 1.
"It's very close to the northern coast of Port Headland (Australia)," said Erma when contacted by Tempo on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
Tropical Cyclone Zelia, mentioned Erma, is still located in the waters directly associated with the southern region of Indonesia, particularly around Sumba Island and Sumbawa Island. As a result, areas including Bali, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Sumba, Sumbawa, and islands in East Nusa Tenggara are affected by strong winds.
According to her, wind speeds in the affected areas vary. "For example, yesterday, I checked it was 50 km per hour in Sumbawa, while in the south of Bali, it was 30 km per hour," she said. The data was obtained from a personal weather station installed in the affected area of the tropical cyclone.
Strong winds due to Zelia have also hit East Java. Banyuwangi is one of the areas affected by strong winds over the past few days.
Erma affirmed that the impact of Tropical Cyclone Zelia is not only felt in Bali but also a wider area. "Not only Bali, but also regions from East Java to Kupang must be cautious," she said.
The cyclone seedling 96S seedling was initially detected south of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) or in the western Indian Ocean off Western Australia. On Monday, February 10, 2025, this seedling had a maximum wind speed of 25 knots, or 46 kilometers per hour, with a minimum pressure of around 998 hPa. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) estimated that this wind vortex would develop into a moderate to high-category tropical cyclone.
