TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's aspirations to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) have received a warm welcome from Canada. Mary Ng, Canada's Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade, and Economic Development, hopes that more countries will be interested in joining CPTPP.
The CPTPP is an agreement open to countries that can meet the standards and partnership criteria established by consensus among its member countries. Partners within the CPTPP have responded positively to Indonesia's intention to join.
“As the Chair of CPTPP 2024, I am very pleased that Indonesia has applied to join this trade agreement,” said Mary Ng during the Canada Trade Mission (TCTM) event in Indonesia at Hotel Mulia, Senayan, Central Jakarta on Monday, December 2, 2024.
“We are confident that Indonesia is a good candidate, but the final decision rests with all CPTPP member countries,” she added.
Prior to this, Indonesia officially submitted its application for CPTPP membership. According to former Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Indonesia's accession application was forwarded to New Zealand as the depositary country.
This application is a crucial step in Indonesia's pursuit of OECD membership. It is anticipated that this membership will stimulate domestic economic reforms and open up new markets, particularly in Latin American countries.
“Moreover, the incoming government, led by President-elect Prabowo Subianto, has instructed us to immediately initiate the accession process,” said Airlangga in September 2024.
With Indonesia's membership in the CPTPP, Airlangga believes the government will be compelled to implement high-standard policies. He anticipates that this will lead to increased imports, exports, and trade with CPTPP member countries. “We aim to achieve at least a 10 percent increase in exports as a result of this membership,” he concluded.
