TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo showcased Indonesia's characteristic hospitality during his visit to the Vatican, catching the attention of international media with his open and friendly demeanor. According to the Secretary General of the Jakarta Archdiocese, Father Adi Prasojo, Cardinal Suharyo, who resides in a monastery about 200 meters from the conclave venue, walks daily wearing his cardinal robe.
"He showed the characteristic hospitality of Indonesia. He served blessings to children, the elderly, and also to the media," said Father Adi Prasojo during an interview with Tempo on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
Cardinal Suharyo's openness to the media contrasts with some other cardinals who tend to avoid journalists. "Many media witnesses feel that Cardinal Suharyo is sympathetic, friendly towards the media. Hence, on his rare trips, he is always surrounded by journalists, and he responds openly, addressing all," said Father Adi.
Cardinal Suharyo even fielded questions from various international media in several languages, including Italian and English. European media often inquired about the conclave preparations and the potential papal candidates, including the possibility of Cardinal Suharyo himself as a contender for the papacy.
"Many other cardinals do not want to answer, remain silent, and leave immediately. But he is friendly and approachable," said Father Adi, emphasizing the unique approach of Cardinal Suharyo that reflects the hospitality of Indonesian culture amidst the dynamics of the Vatican.
