Catholics Attending Christmas Mass at Jakarta Cathedral Can Enter Through Istiqlal Mosque Tunnel

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ahead of the Christmas mass this afternoon, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, the courtyard of the Jakarta Cathedral Church has been sterilized. Unauthorized people are prohibited from entering. The gate appears to be closed with security guards.

Across the street, right in front of the gate of the Istiqlal Mosque, a police post has been set up to secure the Christmas mass agenda. "This year's theme is 'Let Us Now Go to Bethlehem'," said Head of Public Relations of the Cathedral, Susyana Suwadie, Tuesday, December 24, 2024.

The mass will be held for two days on December 24-25, 2024. Today, the mass will be held twice at 17:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) and 20:00 WIB. Susyana said the church has prepared 4,500 chairs to welcome the congregation who will attend mass. The chairs are spread out inside the church, Plaza Maria, Gua Maria, and tents in the yard. They have been preparing for this Christmas mass celebration for the past three months.

For those who attend, they can park their vehicles in the area around the church. Such as at Lapangan Banteng, Kemenag, the post office, and Istiqlal Mosque. "Especially those who park at Istiqlal Mosque, can enter the church through the silaturahmi tunnel that connects Istiqlal and the Cathedral. Because it's the rainy season too," he said.

In the church yard, there are currently ornaments on the roof of the tent. A Christmas tree measuring about five meters is also standing in front of the yard. This afternoon, a number of state officials have also been scheduled to attend the event, including the Chief of Police, the TNI Commander, the Minister of Religion, and the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

Today's first mass will be led by Father Albertus Hani Rudi Hartoko. While the second mass at 20:00 WIB will be led by Father Yohanes Doedatus.
