TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono has issued a strong call for cattle farmers in East Java Province to maintain heightened vigilance against the ongoing Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak.
He asked farmers to conduct regular vaccinations to safeguard livestock from this contagious disease. “Vaccination must be conducted, both facilitated by the government and independently,” Sudaryono said in a written statement on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
He stressed that a single vaccination is insufficient to provide long-term protection, so periodic or repeated vaccinations are crucial to ensure optimal immunity within the cattle population.
This Gerindra Party politician underscored the contagious nature of FMD. Thus, he urged provincial, district, and city governments to remain prepared for potential outbreaks and implement proactive measures to contain the spread of the virus.
With intensive vaccination efforts underway, Sudaryono expressed optimism that the FMD outbreak could end soon. He emphasized the critical role of East Java, which has the largest cattle population in Indonesia, in ensuring national food security.
Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman announced that his ministry has provided 12,500 vaccines to assist in the ongoing FMD control efforts in East Java. Recognizing the escalating number of cases in the province, the ministry has prioritized the immediate distribution of vaccines to unaffected areas, such as Surabaya.
The Ministry of Agriculture has allocated a budget of approximately Rp100 billion to procure 4 million vaccines to combat the nationwide FMD outbreak. To effectively address the situation in East Java, the ministry has deployed a dedicated team to collaborate with provincial and local government authorities in implementing control measures.
