TEMPO.CO, Semarang - Central Java Police public relations chief Senior Commissioner Artanto denied allegations that supporters of PSIS Semarang football club were injured by rubber bullets during a protest at Jatidiri Stadium on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
“In securing the demonstration, or maintaining order at the football match, the police were not equipped with rubber bullets,” Artanto said on Friday, December 27, 2024.
These statements followed a protest by hundreds of PSIS Semarang supporters at the Central Java Police Headquarters on Thursday, December 26, 2024. The supporters demonstrated against alleged police brutality during a previous protest.
“According to the statement of the alleged victim of a rubber bullet injury, there was a hole in his left hand,” said Ragil, a representative of the "Semarang Melawan" Supporters group, during the demonstration.
Ragil further claimed that dozens of other supporters had also experienced violence at the hands of the authorities. “Based on our records, six victims have filed reports,” he added. “However, we believe the actual number of victims is higher.”
He described the injuries sustained by the supporters, including bruises and even instances of self-harm. “Some supporters fainted and experienced foaming at the mouth,” Ragil recalled, suspecting that these symptoms may have been caused by exposure to tear gas fired by the authorities.
In response to these events, PSIS Semarang supporters have initiated a protest and boycott of the club's home games, demanding that club owner Yoyok Sukawi relinquish his majority stake in the team.
