TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Beijing remains committed to playing a constructive role following the explosive meeting between Trump, U.S. VP JD Vance, and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky.
"We noted relevant reports. China will continue to play a constructive role for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and the realization of peace," said Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lin Jian at a press conference in Beijing on Monday, March 3, 2025, local time.
Initially, Zelensky visited the White House on Friday, February 28, to sign an agreement stating Ukraine's willingness to send rare earth metal minerals to the U.S. to secure continued support from Trump’s administration.
"China did not start the Ukraine crisis, nor is it a party to it. We support all efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of the crisis," said Lin Jian.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs hopes that the related parties can find sustainable and lasting solutions that take into account each other's concerns.
The initially smooth and polite meeting between Trump, Vance, and Zelensky turned heated towards the end, with Zelensky and Vance, supported by Trump, exchanging harsh words. Vance accused Zelensky of not being thankful enough for U.S. support, in response to Zelensky questioning Vance’s willingness to negotiate with Russia.
"I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office and litigate this in front of the American media," said Vance, as quoted by Antara.
Zelensky then folded his arms and asked Vance if he had ever been to Ukraine and knew the situation there firsthand. Trump interrupted, saying “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people.”
Trump later wrote on his Truth Social account that Zelensky could "come back when he is ready for peace." About an hour later, Zelensky suddenly left the White House and the mineral agreement signing ceremony was canceled.
Later, Zelensky stated that Europe is united in achieving lasting peace and security for his country. Zelensky conveyed this after attending a summit of European leaders in London on Monday, March 3, 2025. At the meeting, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced plans to form a coalition of several countries willing to achieve peace in Ukraine.
