Coca-Cola Sales Dip in Denmark Amid Boycott Over Trump's Greenland Remarks

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Danish beer producer Carlsberg reported on Tuesday a decline in Coca-Cola sales in Denmark. As reported by Xinhua and cited by Antara, the company attributed this downward trend to a local boycott of U.S.brands, stemming from the political tensions between the two countries.

"Our Coca-Cola volumes are slightly down in Denmark," said Carlsberg CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen during an earnings call following the company's first-quarter (Q1) results.

"There is a level of consumer boycott around the U.S. brands, and it's the only market where we see that to a large extent," he said.

The boycott stemmed from widespread disapproval of U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to acquire Greenland, an autonomous region under the Kingdom of Denmark.

Since taking office earlier this year, Trump has repeatedly voiced his intention to bring Greenland under U.S. control. In March, he declared before the U.S. Congress that America would secure Greenland "by any means necessary."

This remark triggered significant backlash in Denmark.

Following Trump’s statement, membership in a Danish-language Facebook group called "Boykot varer fra USA" (Boycott goods from the US) surged to 95,000 members.

Simultaneously, sales of Denmark’s local soda brand Jolly Cola skyrocketed, as many consumers began favoring local products over American ones.

According to Danish broadcaster DR, supermarket chain Rema 1000 reported that Jolly Cola sales in March were 13 times higher than during the same month the previous year.

Despite the slump in Coca-Cola sales, Carlsberg CFO Heine Dalsgaard Aarup-Andersen stated that the boycott had little impact on the company’s overall performance.

Carlsberg holds the license to bottle and distribute Coca-Cola products in Denmark, including Fanta, Sprite, and Schweppes. The company also distributes Pepsi products in several other European markets but has not seen similar boycotts elsewhere.
