TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) researcher Muhammad Waffaa Kharisma revealed a number of potential impacts after Indonesia joins as a full member of BRICS. Waffaa assessed that this step brings Indonesia closer to the power of China and Russia.
"The decision to join BRICS inevitably has a portion of influence on Indonesia's trust in China's increasing influence," said Waffaa in a written message to Tempo via the WhatsApp application on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Russia and China, Waffaa said, are often at odds with Indonesia even though both have been long-standing partner countries. The China-Russia orbit, said Waffaa, is currently being highlighted by the international world, for example because of the South China Sea and the Ukrainian war.
In addition, Waffaa believes that membership in BRICS could distance Indonesia from old partners who are at odds with China and Russia.
According to Waffaa, the United States government under President-elect Donald Trump could be very reactive to BRICS. "Under Trump, the US will certainly become much more reactionary and protectionist," he said.
Furthermore, Waffaa said that Indonesia also does not have a strong track record of economic cooperation with BRICS countries other than China.
He estimated that Indonesia could find new partners with new business agreements outside of traditional partners with more friendly standard conditions.
Moreover, Waffaa continued, Indonesia does not yet have a campaign spirit for domestic reforms regarding the environment to work standards. He also said that the BRICS investment pattern has not shown any tendency to prioritize cooperation between BRICS countries.
Not stopping there, Waffaa assessed that BRICS is not a group that emphasizes certain ethnic standards or principles, nor is it an economic group aimed at mutually encouraging each other's economies.
