TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Culture Minister Fadli Zon inaugurated the Pusaka Ageming Satriya Kris Exhibition at Ndalem Yudhonegaran, Yogyakarta, on Friday, January 17, 2025. The exhibition, running until January 19, showcases 99 kris blades belonging to princes, collectors, and prominent figures. The displayed pieces span various historical periods, from the Majapahit and Mataram kingdoms to the early days of the Yogyakarta Sultanate.
Fadli Zon, an avid kris collector and Chairman of the Indonesian Kris National Secretariat (SNKI), expressed admiration for the collection displayed at the residence of Gusti Bendara Pangeran Hario (GBPH) Yudhaningrat, the son of the late Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX.
“These krises are not only symbols of beauty but also embody local wisdom and serve as a cultural identity of Indonesia,” said Fadli Zon during the opening ceremony.
Showcasing the Best Krises from Java
Exhibition committee chairman Kanjeng Raden Aryo Tumenggung (KRAT) highlighted that the event features some of the finest krises in Indonesia, particularly from Java.
“Several of these krises have never been displayed at any exhibition before,” he said.
The exhibition includes a selection of GBPH Yudhaningrat's personal collection, some of which were gifts from his father, Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX. Notable items on display include Kyai Peningset, Kyai Rajah, and Kyai Sosroguno — heirloom krises passed down through generations of Yogyakarta's royal family, from Sultan Hamengku Buwono I to HB IX.
Rare items from the Kabudan era, dating back to 1100-1200 AD, are also featured in the exhibition.
A World Heritage Legacy
Paku Alam X, Deputy Governor of Yogyakarta, emphasized that the kris is a prestigious cultural heritage of Indonesia recognized globally by UNESCO.
“The kris is not merely an heirloom but a symbol of philosophy, wisdom, and the noble values of our ancestors,” he stated.
During the event, Fadli Zon underscored the constitutional mandate to promote Indonesia’s national culture as outlined in Article 32, Paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution.
“The kris, as a world heritage intangible cultural asset, underscores the importance of preservation efforts,” he said.
He further announced plans to register more Indonesian intangible cultural heritage items for global recognition. “Currently, there are 2,213 nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage items,” he added.
