TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Danantara Indonesia Investment Management Agenct is currently examining various schemes for the purchase of 50 aircraft units from Boeing for PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. The Managing Director of Stakeholders Management at Danantara Indonesia, Rohan Hafas, affirmed they are ready to purchase 50 Boeing aircraft, but the discussion is currently still at the government's technical level.

"This is still a technical discussion, meaning we are ready to buy 50 units, but Boeing has not yet responded or will respond. They are capable of 10 units, 20 units, that's not yet clear," Rohan said citing Antara, on Friday, February 27, 2026.

Rohan stated that one issue in procuring aircraft fleets is the estimated seven-year delivery time from the manufacturer. "Choosing which type of aircraft, if the delivery time is not immediate, we need to put some thought into it. Because it's still under discussion, meaning we are potential buyers, we have not paid yet. We say we need it sooner than seven years, but the average waiting time is the same worldwide," Rohan said.

Regarding the potential funding sources for the purchase of 50 aircraft, he mentioned various options for funding schemes, including installment payments directly to Boeing. "The sources of funds can vary, but there is a supplier's credit as well; we can also pay in installments to Boeing. All of that is negotiable and must be done later," he stated.

Furthermore, Danantara does not rule out the possibility of injecting additional capital into Garuda Indonesia to support the addition of the fleet. In mid-2025, PT Danantara Asset Management (DAM) had allocated a capital injection to the state-owned airline amounting to Rp23.67 trillion.

"Capital injection must be done later. We actually want to buy aircraft, but there has been a worldwide queue for any airline for about seven years. Hence, the priority is to merge first; it's better to combine so that the fleet's quantity is efficient for a single route," Rohan said.

The discussion on the aircraft procurement plan is a follow-up to the trade agreement between Indonesia and the United States. One of the agreement's points states that Indonesia is obligated to purchase commercial aircraft, aviation goods, and services worth $13.5 billion.

"From this Reciprocal Tariff Agreement, there are several activities that involve the Investment Ministry and Danantara, including the plan to purchase 50 aircraft from Boeing," said the Minister of Investment/Head of the BKPM, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani.
