Deadly Flash Flood in Puncak Bogor Sweeps Away Resident, Triggers Landslide

3 hours ago 17

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A flash flood in Puncak, Cisarua, Bogor, has damaged public infrastructure, triggered landslides, and claimed one life. Heavy rainfall since Sunday, March 2, has destroyed seven bridges, while a local resident was swept away by the floodwaters.

The hydrometeorological disaster has affected 1,399 residents from 381 families. Flooding also hit Bojonggede, Rumpin, and Parung Panjang Districts, submerging homes and roads.

Bogor Regent Rudy Susmanto said disasters were not only concentrated in southern Bogor Regency, particularly in Puncak’s PTPN retirement housing complex, but also in central, western, and eastern regions.

"It’s not just the south. We’re seeing disasters in Citeureup, Bojonggede, Sukajaya, and Gunungputri, along with other locations still being assessed," Rudy said on Monday, March 3.

Landslides and Flooding

According to reports from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), landslides and infrastructure damage were recorded across multiple locations:

  • A 6-meter-high, 4-meter-wide landslide collapsed into the Ciungun River behind a student dormitory in Lebak Sari, South Bogor.

  • A landslide in Cipaku blocked a residential road.

  • A 9-meter-high, 8-meter-long landslide in Cibalagung Pasir Jaya, West Bogor, eroded a bridge foundation.

  • Landslides were also reported in Lemigas on the Puncak Main Road, while flooding submerged homes in Tugu Utara, Cisarua, and Citeko, Bogor Regency.

  • A landslide in Citeureup cut off a bridge to Sukamakmur.

BMKG’s three-day rainfall data shows light to extremely heavy rain across the affected areas, increasing the risk of further landslides in steep areas. The agency forecasts continued rainfall over the next three days, with potential thunderstorms and strong winds across the Bogor Regency and City.

Hundreds Affected, Forced to Evacuate

BPBD reported 119 flooded homes in southern Bogor, displacing 204 residents and affecting 423 people, with one fatality recorded. In Bojonggede, 137 homes were flooded, impacting 547 people. Extreme rainfall in Cibeureum reached 167.6 millimeters per day, with similar heavy rain recorded in Cibinong, Telaga Saat, Cilember, Sukajaya, Citeko, and Ciawi Dam.

In Bogor City, intense rainfall was reported in Cisadane, IPB, Katulampa, and Bogor Botanical Gardens, affecting Muarasari, Cipaku, Pasir Jaya, Gunung Baru, Tegal Gundil, and Cisarua.

Worsened by Deforestation

BPBD suspects land use changes are worsening flooding in Bogor. The conversion of tea plantations into tourist areas in Puncak and deforestation in Cijayanti, Babakan Madang, for real estate, cafés, and restaurants are believed to have contributed to worsening flood conditions.
