TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The doublet earthquake in Mandalay on Friday, March 28, caused damages not only in Myanmar but also in parts of its neighboring Thailand. The catastrophic earthquake has claimed the lives of thousands of people, and the highest estimates reach 10,000.

As quoted from Anadolu, the death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar on Friday has risen to at least 2,000 people, with 3,900 injured and nearly 270 reported missing.

In Mandalay, the city most severely affected, crematoriums are overwhelmed by the surge in the number of bodies. Major cemeteries such as Kyanikan, Taung-Inn, and Myauk-Inn are facing difficulties as bodies continue to arrive while families try to cremate their loved ones, as reported by Myanmar Now.

"Yesterday, we cremated over 300 bodies. This morning, more than 200 have already been processed," said a resident on Sunday.

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that shook Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, last Friday has increased to 17 people, while 32 people have been injured and 83 others are still missing, according to the disaster management authorities on Sunday.

The earthquake has caused infrastructure damage in 18 out of 76 provinces in Thailand, affecting 420 houses, 48 temples, 76 hospitals, as well as dozens of schools and government offices, based on the report from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

The department head, Phasakorn Boonyalak, stated that the current situation is under control, with impact assessments ongoing and the risk of aftershocks diminishing.

As an emergency response, urban search and rescue teams equipped with special equipment have been dispatched from various disaster prevention and mitigation centers to Bangkok, the most severely affected area, to aid in evacuation and rescue efforts, added Boonyalak.

Offer of Assistance from Neighboring Countries

On Friday, countries in Asia expressed their solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand, which were affected by the earthquakes, and offered humanitarian assistance. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his statement expressed his concern about the devastating earthquakes that struck the central region of Myanmar and northern Thailand, causing significant damage to infrastructure.
