TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, February 16, 2025, expressed confidence in soon meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump can't wait to discuss ways to end the war in Ukraine.
In front of journalists, Trump said he is working hard to achieve peace in Ukraine. He is very certain that both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky want to stop the fighting.
Trump made the remarks as the United States and Russia are preparing for a meeting initiative in Saudi Arabia in the coming days.
"He (Putin) wants to end it. He doesn't want to go back to war in a few months. I think we are on the road to peace. I think President Putin wants peace, as well as President Zelensky. I want to stop seeing people being killed," said Trump, February 12, 2025.
Trump has long expressed a desire to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible. But he did not explain how to end the war.
The Kremlin previously stated that Putin and Trump had agreed to meet face-to-face. In fact, Putin had already invited Trump to visit Moscow.
Prior to February 14, 2025, in an interview with NBC News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Putin wanted to come to negotiate, but not to end the war, but to lock in a ceasefire agreement to lift some of the sanctions imposed on Russia and allow Moscow's military to strengthen again.
Ukraine demands that Moscow withdraw its troops from the Ukrainian territories controlled by Russia. Ukraine also seeks NATO membership or security guarantees to prevent Russia from invading the country again.
Regarding NATO, the U.S. government under President Trump openly stated for the first time that it is unrealistic for Kyiv to return to the 2014 borders or join the NATO alliance as part of any agreement. The United States will not deploy troops to join any security force in Ukraine that may be formed to ensure a ceasefire.
