TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods inundated several areas across the tourist region Yogyakarta after heavy rain that lasted hours on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Water submerged several roads, including Jalan Adisutjipto east of Ambarrukmo Plaza, and Jalan Colombo in front of the Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) campus, to Jalan Wonosari.
Heavy rain also caused the water level of the Gajah Wong River, one of the largest rivers in Yogyakarta City, to rise significantly, even overflowing and submerging the residential areas in Umbulharjo Sub-district.
Meanwhile, near the tourist destination of Mount Merapi slopes, rain and strong winds lashed Pakem Sub-district in Sleman, uprooting a 40-centimeter-diameter tree and damaging a car. The downpours also caused 47 trees to fall, scattered across several districts, damaging a total of 137 houses.
"Heavy rain is predicted to continue until Monday (January 19, 2026), including in several tourist destinations," said Warjono, Head of the Yogyakarta BMKG Meteorology Station, on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
