Tempo.co, Jakarta - The Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, responded to the suggestion made by Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, who proposed Indonesia as a potential destination for relocating residents of Gaza, Palestine. While she did not provide extensive comments on the relocation idea, she reaffirmed that the Indonesian government remains committed to supporting Palestine's independence.

"Indonesia's stance remains supportive of Palestine's independence," said Puan Maharani after opening the parliamentary session at the Senayan Parliament Complex on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

Puan stated that she would address the proposal to relocate Gaza residents from Palestine to Indonesia with Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI). The discussion will focus on determining the Indonesian government's position on the suggestion put forward by Steve Witkoff, the elected Middle East envoy of President Donald Trump.

"Yes, we will likely discuss the relocation of Gaza residents in Commission I, and of course, we will align the government's position with the DPR," said Puan.

Meanwhile, according to NBC, including transition officials, Steve Witkoff proposed Indonesia as a potential destination to temporarily relocate 2 million residents from Gaza. The relocation would take place during the reconstruction of the Gaza region.

"The question of how to rebuild Gaza remains unresolved, aside from where approximately 2 million Palestinians could be temporarily relocated. Indonesia, for instance, is one of the locations being considered for some of them," said the transition official, as quoted by NBC.

Witkoff plans to travel to the Middle East in the coming weeks to address the ongoing unrest. He believes that the instability on the ground could undermine agreements and jeopardize the release of hostages held by Hamas at any time.

At the same time, Witkoff is working to secure long-term stability for both Israeli citizens and the 2 million displaced Palestinians.

Regarding Steve Witkoff's proposal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it has not received any information or plans from any source regarding the relocation of some of Gaza’s 2 million residents to Indonesia as part of post-conflict reconstruction efforts. Indonesia is avoiding speculation on the matter without clearer information.

In a written statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Indonesia's firm stance that any efforts to relocate Gaza’s residents are unacceptable. Such attempts to reduce Gaza's population would only reinforce Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territories and align with a broader strategy aimed at displacing Palestinians from Gaza.

"A ceasefire in Gaza should be seen as an opportunity to initiate dialogue and negotiations toward a two-state solution, in line with international law and the internationally agreed-upon parameters," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
