TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara has resumed operations after being temporarily closed since July 17, 2024. This temporary closure was due to flight safety concerns following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi which emits volcanic ash.
The Head of Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Maumere Class II Airport Operator Unit, Partahian Panjaitan, stated that the reopening of the airport took place after the issuance of the Notice to Airman (NOTAM) for normal operation of the aerodrome under NOTAM Office Number: C1979/24 NOTAMC C1978/24 on December 1, 2024, at 03:43 p.m. local time.
"The evaluation of ASHTAM information, SIGMET messages, and volcanic ash dispersion forecast maps shows that the airspace of the airport has not been affected by volcanic ash since December 1, 2024," Partahian said in an official statement from the Ministry of Transportation on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
ASHTAM is a type of special NOTAM with a specific format that provides information on changes in volcanic activity, eruptions, and ash clouds that may affect aircraft operations. Meanwhile, SIGMET News is a message that contains information related to meteorological phenomena and hazards that may affect aviation safety.
Partahian also mentioned that this assessment was supported by information from the Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Meteorological Station regarding the wind forecast for the Sikka district for December 2-6, 2024, which shows the dominant wind direction moving from west to north.
With these developments, Partahian mentioned that Wings Air and Nam Air have resumed ticket sales for flights beginning December 16, 2024. Previously, these two airlines had suspended operations since July 17, 2024, due to the presence of hazardous volcanic ash in the airspace, which posed a risk to flight safety.
In terms of flight operations, Wings Air operates the Maumere-Kupang round-trip route and the Labuan Bajo-Maumere round-trip route. Meanwhile, Nam Air will operate the Kupang-Maumere round-trip route.
Partahian also referred to the reopening of Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Maumere Airport as a pre-Christmas gift. "This will allow our brothers and sisters from and to Maumere and surrounding areas to travel home to gather with their families," he said.
However, he assured that they will continue to coordinate with the Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Meteorological Station, Airnav Indonesia, and airlines to monitor developments regarding the impact of the eruption of Mount Lewotobi. Aviation safety remains a top priority.
"We will continue to coordinate with relevant parties to ensure safe and comfortable flights," said Partahian.
