TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A recent study from the Pew Research Center revealed widespread public concern about economic inequality in a survey conducted in 36 countries, including Indonesia. The results show that a median of 54 percent of adults across nations see the gap between rich and poor as a major problem.
The survey, conducted in the spring of 2024, revealed various contributing factors to economic inequality, including the excessive political influence possessed by rich people. In addition, problems with the education system, discrimination against minorities, as well as unequal opportunities from birth are also considered major factors that exacerbate economic inequality.
The report was compiled by Richard Wike, Moira Fagan, Christine Huang, Laura Clancy, and Jordan Lippert of the Pew Research Center. The study, published on January 9, 2025, can be accessed through the Pew Research Center website. Here are the four main findings highlighted in the study.
1. Economic Inequality as a Big Problem
The survey results show that most people in the 36 countries surveyed consider the gap between rich and poor to be a very big problem. Meanwhile, a smaller median of 30 percent considered economic inequality to be a “moderately big” problem. This concern about economic inequality shows how important it is for people to be aware of the issue concerning wealth distribution and its impact on socioeconomic stability.
2. Political Influence of the Rich Exacerbates Economic Inequality
In 31 countries, more respondents believe the heavy political influence of the rich contributes “a great deal” to economic inequality. This view indicates a concern about how political power wielded by the rich can influence public policy, which in turn exacerbates economic inequality.
3. Pessimistic Views on Children's Financial Future
The survey also noted a pessimistic view of children's financial future, with a median of 57 percent saying “children will grow up to be financially worse off than their parents.” This illustrates widespread pessimism about the economic opportunities of future generations. This view is strongest in high-income countries such as the U.S. and Canada, where nearly three-quarters of respondents believe in a worse financial future for their children.
4. Support for Significant Economic Change
The survey also found a strong push for economic change in many countries. In 33 of the 36 countries surveyed, a majority of respondents agreed that their economic system needs major change or complete reform. A median of 52 percent of respondents calls for major change, while 20 percent want a complete reform.
Many middle-income countries, such as Nigeria, Tunisia, and Ghana, favor “complete economic reform,” while high-income countries like the Netherlands and Sweden have fewer than half of the adults wanting significant economic changes.
