TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, is set to visit the White House and meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, April 14, 2025, for an "official working visit," according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
As reported by Al Jazeera, Bukele's visit comes as the Trump administration deported a number of migrants suspected of being gang members to a large prison in El Salvador.
The contentious deportation program, which has faced several legal challenges, involves transferring migrants from the U.S. who are suspected gang members to El Salvador. This includes Venezuelan citizens accused of being members of the criminal gangs Tren de Aragua.
President Trump praised El Salvador’s government cooperation in a post on Truth Social on Saturday, "Our nations are working closely together to eradicate terrorist organizations and build a future of Prosperity. President Bukele has graciously accepted into his Nation’s custody some of the most violent alien enemies of the World and, in particular, the United States."
Trump added that the deported individuals are now in detention in El Salvador, and "they will never threaten or menace our Citizens again!"
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Sunday that the Trump administration had deported an additional 10 people to El Salvador as part of the ongoing immigration crackdown.
"Last night, another 10 criminals from the MS-13 and Tren de Aragua Foreign Terrorist Organizations arrived in El Salvador. The alliance between @POTUS and President @nayibukele has become an example for security and prosperity in our hemisphere," Rubio said in a statement on the X platform.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration is also facing legal issues regarding the deportations. On Saturday, the government provided a health report on Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man deported to El Salvador, after a federal judge ordered the White House to report his status.
"He is alive and secure in that facility. He is detained pursuant to the sovereign, domestic authority of El Salvador," said Michael Kozak, a State Department official, in a filing on Saturday.
However, on Sunday, the Trump administration stated that they "do not have an update" on efforts to facilitate Garcia's return to the United States.
The Trump administration relied on the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to justify these deportations. Hundreds of people have been extradited under the rule that allows for the transfer of citizens from countries deemed hostile during times of conflict.
The government claims that all those deported have been screened and linked to gangs considered by the U.S. as "terrorist" organizations.
However, lawyers and family members of the detainees refute these claims, stating that many did not have the opportunity to challenge the allegations in court. Civil rights advocates argue that labeling migrants as gang members without due process violates the rule of law.
