TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairperson Erick Thohir recently shared his vision for the transformation of Indonesian football in an interview with Best Eleven, one of South Korea's oldest monthly magazines. He emphasized PSSI's commitment to establishing a transparent, professional, and high-achieving football ecosystem.
“To build a team that wants to work hard for the projects and working together is very important,” said Erick in an excerpt from the interview, as quoted from a post on his official Instagram account on Friday, December 27, 2024.
Erick acknowledged that management issues have been one of the weaknesses in the management of Indonesian football. “Sometimes, the management is not too open-minded, corrupt, not too transparent, not professional. So these are something that we want to change,” he said.
During the interview, Erick highlighted the importance of passionate and dedicated leadership. “As a leader, I love what I'm doing. This is very important. You cannot be successful if you don't work with your heart,” he added.
Erick emphasized that achieving PSSI's goals requires dedication and collaborative teamwork. “I am very ambitious in setting targets. Two of these will not exist if you don’t have a team that supports you. So, to build a team that wants to work hard for the projects and work together is very important.”
Furthermore, Erick revealed PSSI's ambitious target of qualifying the Indonesian National Team for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. “In the next 2 years, 2027, we have the U23 AFC cup that is also a qualifier for the Olympics, so we need to start the program from now.”
Regarding the World Cup qualification, Erick stressed the importance of focusing on the remaining four matches in the qualifying round. “We still have four games to go. So let's focus on these four matches because to qualify [for it,] you have to be the number two in the groups or go through the playoffs if you are in the third or fourth place three or four,” he said.
In his Instagram post, Erick expressed confidence in achieving these ambitious goals, emphasizing the importance of collective effort and dedication. “To achieve these goals, hard work from the entire team is needed, working with the heart and believing in our shared dreams,” he concluded.
