EU Council President: Netanyahu's Gaza Strategy Destroys Hopes for Two-State Solution

4 hours ago 11

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - European Council President Antonio Costa has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of trying to undermine the prospects for a two-state solution.

In an interview with the Spanish broadcasting media Cadena SER, as quoted by Anadolu on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Costa condemned Israel's recent approval of military occupation in Gaza, explicitly calling it a violation of international law.

"Netanyahu is trying to destroy the possibility of the existence of two states," he said.

"Europe must be clear – condemn Israel’s violation of international law and support a two-state solution."

The former Prime Minister of Portugal and the first Socialist figure to hold the permanent position of European Council President is in Spain for an official visit.

On Monday, the Israeli Security Cabinet approved a plan to expand its ongoing military attacks in the Gaza Strip and occupy areas within the Palestinian enclave.

Almost all Palestinians in the area have been displaced, often repeatedly, since the start of the Israeli genocide triggered by Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. With Israel's latest plan, Palestinian residents will be forcibly evicted, possibly abroad.

Gaza has been under a full Israeli blockade since March 2 and is currently experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis.

On March 18, the Israeli military resumed strikes in the Gaza Strip, breaching a ceasefire that had lasted two months.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot condemned Israel’s military strategy in a radio interview on Tuesday, calling it "unacceptable" and accusing the Netanyahu administration of "violating international humanitarian law."

A statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the Cabinet had approved an "operational plan" by military chief Eyal Zamir aimed at defeating Hamas and securing the return of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

The plan reportedly involves Israeli forces occupying and maintaining control over Gaza.

Israel’s Channel 12 also reported that the plan includes the forced displacement of Palestinians from northern Gaza to the south.

Over 52,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Gaza in Israel's brutal attacks since October 2023.

In November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the enclave.
