EU Diplomats Visit Palestine's West Bank Following Deadly Israeli Settlers Attack

5 hours ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A European Union diplomatic delegation visited the Palestinian town of Kafr Malik in the occupied West Bank on Monday, June 30, 2025, to assess the aftermath of deadly attacks by illegal Israeli settlers, Anadolu reported.

Three Palestinians were killed and seven others injured last Wednesday when Israeli settlers raided Kafr Malik, located northeast of Ramallah, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported at the time that dozens of settlers attacked the town, burning Palestinian vehicles, and were confronted by local residents and people from nearby villages.

Laila Ghannam, governor of Ramallah and Al-Bireh, said in a statement posted on her Facebook page that the visiting delegation included around 20 ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from the European Union, as well as the ambassadors of Canada and the United Kingdom.

The delegation visited damaged homes and burned vehicles and met with the families of the victims.

Ghannam told the diplomats that the attack was part of “a systematic Israeli policy adopted by the extremist occupation government” led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

He accused Israeli officials of “giving full political cover to settler militias as part of a broader strategy to uproot Palestinians from their land.”

Ghannam urged the European Union to take “concrete political action beyond writing reports,” warning that the international community's inaction had emboldened Israeli forces and illegal settlers—the “two sides of the same coin”—to commit further crimes against Palestinians.

EU representative for Palestine Alexandre Stutzmann said the delegation was “deeply shocked and disturbed” by what they saw in Kafr Malik.

“No one should be killed in their home, have their property vandalized or their vehicles burned, or be forced to live in fear in their own village,” Stutzmann said.

He said the visit was intended to express the EU's solidarity with the Palestinian people “from a place of humanitarian responsibility.”

Illegal Israeli settlers have stepped up their attacks on Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank in recent weeks.

Attacks by Israeli illegal settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have surged by 30 percent this year, according to Israeli data on Sunday, as reported by Anadolu.

Israeli Army Radio, citing government data, said the first half of 2025 saw 414 settler attacks, up from 318 in the first half of last year.

According to the radio, Israeli illegal settlers carried out 679 attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank in 2024.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Occupation and Resistance Wall documented 415 settler attacks against Palestinians and their property in May alone, ranging from armed attacks to land destruction, tree uprooting, and forced closures.

Since the start of Israel's offensive in Gaza in October 2023, at least 986 Palestinians have been killed and over 7,000 injured in the West Bank by Israeli forces and illegal settlers, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in July that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
