TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  US President Donald Trump expressed his optimism to reach a trade deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the near future.

Planned Meeting at APEC 2025

As quoted from CNA, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Trump said he's hoping to meet Xi in South Korea next week at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, which will take place in Gyeongju from October 31 to November 1, 2025.

"So now we're going to have a fair deal, and I think we're going to have a very successful meeting. Certainly, there are a lot of people that are waiting for it," said Trump during a luncheon with Republican senators at the White House. He added that although the meeting plan has been scheduled, there is still a possibility that the meeting could be canceled.

"Maybe it won't happen. Things can happen where, for instance, maybe somebody will say, 'I don't want to meet. It's too nasty.' But it's really not nasty," he said. Trump first announced the planned meeting with Xi on September 19 and mentioned that he would visit China early next year.

Tariff Tensions and Global Supply Chain

According to a report from Arirang News, Trump's optimism arises amid the U.S. government's plan to impose an additional 100% tariff on goods from China starting on November 1. If implemented, the total tariff burden on China's exports to the United States could reach 157%.

This move was taken after Beijing tightened the export of rare earth minerals, which was considered by Washington as a challenge to the global supply chain. Despite the escalating tension, Trump emphasized that his personal relationship with Xi remains good and he hopes that both parties can reach a mutually beneficial agreement. "I think we're going to be fine with China, but we have to have a fair deal. It's got to be fair," he said.

Trump also highlighted the success of the tariff policies he has implemented. He mentioned that the United States has been successful in trade negotiations with South Korea, Japan, and the European Union. According to Trump, the tariff policy strengthens the bargaining position of the United States, reduces trade deficits, attracts new foreign investment, and promotes the growth of domestic manufacturing industries.
