TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warns the public to remain vigilant against extreme weather potential in the coming week. The chance of heavy rain, accompanied by lightning and strong winds, is even increasing in some regions.
The increase is due to several atmospheric phenomena predicted to affect weather patterns in Indonesia. "Especially as several regions are entering the peak of the rainy season," reads part of the weekly weather forecast for December 3 to 9, 2024, issued by BMKG today, Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
Some of the atmospheric phenomena are still the same as last week, namely the Indian Ocean Negative Dipole. This negative dipole mode is expected to remain consistent in the coming week, increasing rainfall in western Indonesia.
There is also the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), which is in phase 4 or active over western Indonesia, as well as Rossby and Kelvin waves. All of these support the formation of rain clouds in the Indonesian region.
The BMKG no longer includes the influence of cyclone seeds or tropical cyclones. However, there is an atmospheric dynamic called the low-frequency center of a low-pressure area, or vortex seeds, according to climatology researcher at BRIN Erma Yulihastin.
From the combination of the above atmospheric phenomena or dynamics, BMKG predicts that rain of moderate to very heavy intensity, which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds, will occur in the following regions:
- Sumatra: Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, Bangka Belitung Islands, Bengkulu, Lampung.
- Java and Bali: Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Bali.
- East Nusa Tenggara: West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
- Kalimantan: West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan.
- Sulawesi: North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi.
- Maluku and Papua: North Maluku, Maluku, Southwest Papua, West Papua, Central Papua, Mountainous Papua, Papua and South Papua.
Heavy to extreme rain, possibly accompanied by lightning and strong winds, will occur in the following areas:
1. South Sumatra
2. Yogyakarta Special Region
3. East Java
4. East Nusa Tenggara
