TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A video claiming to show United Nations (UN) representatives inaugurating Indonesia's new capital city of Nusantara (IKN) in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan, has circulated on Instagram [archive], Facebook, and TikTok.
The footage displays bustling airport activity, ranging from landing aircraft to motorcades escorting international guests. The uploader included an overlaid text narration stating, "The UN delegation has arrived at IKN. Inauguration of the IKN."
However, does the video really show the arrival of a UN delegation in Indonesia to inaugurate the new capital?
FACT CHECK
Tempo verified the content using reverse image searches and cross-referenced it with credible sources. Results indicate that although the events in the video occurred in Indonesia, the arrival of these guests was not for the inauguration of the capital.
Video and Location Verification
At the two-second mark, the video shows an airport apron with two curved-roof hangars in the background. Location verification via Google Maps confirms these hangars belong to the aircraft maintenance company PT Avia Technics Dirgantara (FL Technics Indonesia), located at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali.
The five second of the video shows a row of South Korean and Turkish aircraft transporting officials to the G20 Summit on November 15-16, 2022. The Bali Provincial Government's YouTube channel also documented these arrivals, including the specific South Korean and Turkish planes, confirming that the recording took place in Bali rather than the IKN airport.
Furthermore, the airport architecture in the video contrasts sharply with the design of the IKN airport, which the IKN Authority notes is inspired by Dayak longhouses.
At the 19-second mark, a bus labeled "G20 Bali" appears, which was one of 30 electric buses used for the summit, as previously reported by Tempo. This series of verifications confirms that the circulating video is footage from the G20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, in November 2022.
No IKN Inauguration Yet
The government has not yet inaugurated the Nusantara Capital in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan. President Prabowo Subianto set a target for the IKN to become the political capital in 2028. Currently, the project is in its second construction phase with a budget allocation of Rp6 trillion from the State Budget (APBN).
Head of the IKN Authority, Basuki Hadimuljono, stated that this year’s development includes a complex for legislative and judicial institutions, such as buildings for the DPR/MPR, the Supreme Court, and the Constitutional Court. According to Presidential Regulation Number 79 of 2025, the 2026 development focus will shift from basic infrastructure to strengthening the IKN’s role as a political hub and a national center for digital innovation.
