TEMPO.CO, Mataram - A ship caught fire in the waters of Gili Meno, Gili Indah Village, Pemenang District, North Lombok Regency, on Tuesday, March 3, 2025. The ship, which departed from Sumbawa Port, was about to sail to Bali Island before it caught fire.
According to the ship's captain, Herianto, the fire was first seen coming from the exhaust pipe, which then spread to the ship's hull.
"We attempted to extinguish the fire, but it quickly spread to the entire ship," said Herianto. "We immediately saved ourselves by jumping into the sea."
The Chief of North Lombok Police Water Unit, Adjunct Commissioner Sugi Jaya, contacted by Tempo on Tuesday afternoon, reported that three crew members, including the captain, were safe.
However, the ship, along with the fish caught, were incinerated in the fire. "The estimated loss is more than two hundred million rupiahs," said Sugi.
A video of the burning fish carrier has been circulating on several social media accounts. The video shows blazing fire at the back of the ship, but several fishing boats around the ship were hesitant to approach and provide assistance.
