Food Consumption Dominates Indonesians' Spending: Study

TEMPO.CO, JakartaBright Institute presented the results of its study on the consumption expenditure patterns of the Indonesian population. An economist from Bright Institute, Awalil Rizky, said 50.10 percent of Indonesians’ spending is on food. The data is obtained from Statistics Indonesia, or BPS, on per capita expenditure in a month in 2024.

"According to the latest data, 50.10 percent of the population’s expenditures are for food. The comparison is slightly higher than 50 to 50 percent with non-food expenditure falling behind,” said Awalil during a virtual discussion reviewing the IMF's economic projections for Indonesia on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

He mentioned that consumption expenditure patterns are necessary to consider due to President Prabowo Subianto's food security goals. The expenditure data can project the food consumption required for food resilience.

Regarding the expenditure patterns for food consumption, Awalil said the Indonesian population experienced a drop in spending share due to dependence on expenditure to meet their food consumption.

"Meaning, the welfare of Indonesian people is highly dependent on their food spending,” said Awalil.

He stated that the Indonesian population has not met welfare standards due to their significant food portion. "This generally indicates that there has been no overall improvement in welfare in Indonesia as the food portion is still half or even worse than in recent years," he added.
