TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe losses caused by the foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak are expected to affect not only the livestock industry but export performance as well, said the member of the expert council of the Indonesian Cattle and Buffalo Farmers Association, Rochadi Tawaf.

“Regional and international trade will be disrupted. FMD-free countries will avoid importing other agricultural products from us. Not to mention other immeasurable impacts, such as labor termination,” Rochadi told Tempo as quoted on Friday, January 17, 2025.

Citing a 2009 study by the University of Indonesia's Indonesia Research Strategic Analysis, he said the livestock subsector, especially beef, is intertwined with various industrial sectors. The meat, offal and similar industries are linked to 66 other industries. Meanwhile, the processed and preserved meat industry is linked to 54 other industries.

If these two sectors experience disruptions or—in extreme circumstances—are completely eliminated, the aforementioned linked industries are set to be affected in a real manner, either in terms of marketing output or obtaining inputs.

Based on inputs required for these two industry groups, Rochadi estimates the loss for the meat, offal, and similar industries to be around Rp39.2 trillion, while the processed and preserved meat industry is Rp1.5 trillion.

Despite the small contribution this sector has on the gross domestic product (GDP), Rochadi said a disruption on the meat, offal, and similar industries will cut around Rp40 trillion in revenue.

From December 28, 2024, to January 13, 2025, the foot and mout disease has reportedly infected around 1,240 livestock. Of these, 53 animals died, 51 were conditionally slaughtered, 111 recovered, there were 898 active cases, and the rest were suspected to be exposed to the foot and mouth disease.

The foot and mouth disease cases were reported in 7 provinces, 50 districts/cities, 152 sub-districts, and 286 villages, and the disease infects hundreds of cattle daily.

On January 9, 2025, for example, 349 cattle were infected.

The government has tried to control the foot and mouth disease by providing 32,617 doses of vaccination, treatment for 10,530 cattle, disinfection in 605 locations, investigation in 320 locations, and education in 1,075 locations. The efforts is carried out in 12 provinces, 72 districts/cities, 403 sub-districts, and 773 villages.
