TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Protection of Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that no Indonesian citizens (WNI) were victims of the Jeju Air crash. The South Korean airline crashed while landing at Muan International Airport on Sunday, December 29, 2024.
Director General of PWNI Judha Nugraha said via a short message reported by Antara that based on informal information obtained, there were no Indonesian passengers on the plane. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Seoul continue to monitor the plane crash that occurred at Muan International Airport.
Judha added that the Indonesian Embassy is coordinating with local authorities regarding the disaster.
The death toll in the Jeju Air plane crash in South Korea continues to increase. Reported by Channel News Asia, at least 85 people died.
The plane crashed when the plane overshot the runway and erupted into a ball of fire as it hit a wall at Muan International Airport, South Korea, on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024. Yonhap news agency quoted airport authorities as saying the landing gear likely failed due to a bird strike.
Before the plane went down, a passenger sent a text message to a relative to say there was a bird stuck in the plane's wing, News1 news agency reported. The person's last message was, "Should I say my last words?"
A bird strike is one of several unverified theories, an official from the transport ministry's aviation department said. But the allegation has not been conclusive as the investigation is ongoing.
The crash occurred as Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, carrying 175 passengers and six crew on a flight from the Thai capital, Bangkok, landed shortly after 9 a.m. at the airport in the southern part of the country, South Korea's transport ministry said.
