TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) Sugiono revealed Indonesia's strategic steps in the international world, one of which was through Indonesia's success in joining as a full member of BRICS in January 2025.
Sugiono said that Indonesia's accession process to BRICS membership was part of active diplomacy under the direction of President Prabowo Subianto. In less than three months, Sugiono explained, BRICS members agreed to decide and accept Indonesia.
"Here, we see that Indonesia is seen as an important country to be able to join immediately," said Sugiono when delivering a speech at the 2025 Annual Press Statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (PPTM) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) office, Central Jakarta, on Friday, January 10, 2025.
Furthermore, Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia's membership in BRICS is a real manifestation of the principle of an active free foreign policy and not a deviation.
"Because this decision is not the result of overnight work, but the fruit of Indonesia's diplomatic efforts, consistency, and determination for decades." he said.
As a member of BRICS, Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia will ensure that the bridge of interests of developing countries and the Indo-Pacific region remains intact.
In addition, Sugiono also said that Indonesia's active membership in BRICS also goes hand in hand with the active role of cooperation with other countries such as in the G20, APEC, IPEF, MIKTA, and CPTPP as well as the accession stage as a member of the OECD.
On January 6, 2025, Indonesia officially became a full member of BRICS, an influential economic group consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This announcement was made by Brazil, which currently holds the BRICS presidency. Indonesia's entry into full membership of BRICS marks a historic moment in Indonesia's economic diplomacy at the global level.
Previously, Indonesia applied to become a member of BRICS and was accepted by consensus by all BRICS members in 2023, but Indonesia chose to formalize its membership after a new government was formed. On January 6, 2025, Indonesia was announced as a full member of BRICS.
