TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono held a bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Hussein Al Sheikh, on the sidelines of the BRICS Plus High-Level Conference on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. In the meeting, Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to the struggle of the Palestinian people to achieve independence.
"I will ensure that the issue of Palestine always remains at the forefront of Indonesian diplomacy, and we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Palestine," emphasized Minister Sugiono.
During the meeting, Sugiono conveyed three things. First, he reiterated political support for Palestine, including continuing to push for a permanent ceasefire and other peace efforts towards the Two-State Solution.
Second, he reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to humanitarian aid to Palestine, both bilaterally and through UN bodies such as UNRWA and ILO. Third, he emphasized the importance of collective efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
According to Sugiono, the BRICS Summit should be utilized to strengthen collaboration as a positive force to continue striving for peace in Palestine. Previously, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed his support for Palestinian independence in his inaugural address after being sworn in during the Plenary Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
This desire was expressed by Prabowo after delivering a speech about his willingness to be friends with all countries and adhere to an anti-colonial principle. Prabowo stated that the Indonesian people have also experienced colonization and oppression.
"Therefore, we have a principle, we must be in solidarity, we must defend the oppressed peoples in this world," he said.
Regarding his support for Palestine, Prabowo said he was ready to provide assistance in the form of hospitals and evacuate victims. "We are ready to evacuate those who are wounded, children traumatized, and victims," said the former Minister of Defense.
