TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s new Foreign Minister, Sugiono, expressed his commitment to continue defending Palestine in international forums. He conveyed the statement after his inauguration into President Prabowo’s cabinet on Monday, October 21, 2024.
Sugiono maintained that he would uphold Prabowo's stance concerning Palestine, which is currently struggling against Israeli invasion.
"Our concern for Palestine is something absolute," said Sugiono when met by journalists at the Pancasila Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs complex, on Monday evening, October 21.
Sugiono asserted that the Indonesian government will always be steadfast in its support for Palestinian independence since Israel’s colonization goes against the 1945 Constitution.
"We also strive to actively participate in efforts to liberate and eliminate colonization across the globe as mandated by the constitution," he said.
When asked about the plan to establish an Indonesian Embassy in Palestine, Sugiono briefly answered, “We are studying (the possibility).”
President Prabowo previously expressed his support for Palestinian independence when delivering his inaugural speech in an MPR plenary session on Sunday, October 20. "We support the Palestinian independence,” he affirmed.
According to the president, the Indonesian people also suffered from colonization and oppression. He expressed his desire to build friendly relations with countries that uphold an anti-colonialism principle.
"Therefore, we have a principle; we must stand in solidarity; and we must defend the oppressed people in this world," he said.
Prabowo declared that he was ready to provide hospitals and evacuate victims from the besieged enclave. "We are ready to evacuate those who are injured and children with trauma,” said Prabowo.
