Four Consecutive Earthquakes Hit Cianjur, BMKG: No Damage Reported

TEMPO.CO, JakartaResidents of Cibeber District, Cianjur Regency, West Java, have been hit by four consecutive earthquakes today, Thursday, November 21, 2024.

The first tremor occurred at 8:17 a.m. with a magnitude of 2.2. This earthquake originated on land, 15 kilometers southeast of the center of Cianjur Regency. Cibeber residents felt the tremor with an intensity scale of II MMI, causing some hanging objects to sway.

The coordinates of the earthquake were 6.96 degrees Southern Latitude and 107.15 degrees Longitude East at a depth of 5 kilometers.

As noon approached, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded another tremor of 2.9 magnitude in the same area. Occurred at 11:25 a.m., the epicenter was on land, 17 kilometers southeast of the center of Cianjur Regency.

The shallow earthquake was caused by active fault activities with a depth of 9 kilometers. Cibeber residents felt this quake on a III MMI scale.

A few minutes later, at 11:27 a.m., another earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred, felt by residents of Cibeber District, with an intensity scale of III MMI as well.

The earthquake originated on land and was caused by an active fault, 21 kilometers southeast of the center of Cianjur Regency, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. 

A minute later, at 11:28 a.m., a 3.0 magnitude earthquake was felt again by residents of Cibeber District with an intensity scale of III MMI, likened to trucks passing by. 

According to BMKG, the earthquake originated on land, 15 kilometers southeast of the center of Cianjur Regency. The earthquake was classified as shallow with a depth of 5 kilometers at coordinates 6.96 degrees South Latitude and 107.15 degrees Longitude East.

"The earthquake was due to active fault activities," said the Head of BMKG Region II Tangerang, Hartanto, in a written statement on Thursday, November 21.

According to BMKG, there have been no reports of damaged buildings as a result of the earthquake. Until noon, no aftershocks were detected.
