TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The East Aceh Police have named four Myanmar nationals as suspects in an alleged human smuggling case. They are accused of orchestrating the illegal entry of 76 Rohingya immigrants into Indonesia via the Mak Leuge coast, Leuge Village, Peureulak District, East Aceh, on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
East Aceh Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Nova Suryandaru, through East Aceh Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head First Insp. Adi Wahyu Nurhidayat, identified the suspects as AB (51), MU (48), MH (46), and NO (45).
“AB and MU took turns serving as the ship’s captain, MH acted as the navigator, and NO was responsible for the engine,” Adi stated on Friday, February 7.
Adi said testimonies from the Rohingya immigrants confirmed the suspects’ involvement in bringing them into Indonesian waters.
Authorities are still investigating the case to determine whether it is part of a larger human smuggling operation.
“The suspects have been charged under Article 120, Paragraph (1) of Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration. They face a minimum of five years and a maximum of 15 years in prison,” Adi said. The four suspects remain in custody at the East Aceh Police headquarters for further questioning.
