TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French President Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of a joint committee between France and Palestine to strengthen Palestine's statehood. As reported by Anadolu, Macron stated that the committee would focus on law, constitutional matters, and institutions.

"The committee will contribute to drafting a new constitution, on the basis of the project presented by President Abbas, and complete all the conditions necessary for a viable State of Palestine," said Macron during a joint press conference with President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris on Tuesday, November 12, 2025.

Macron emphasized that France will respond firmly with its European partners if Israel proceeds with the annexation of parts or the whole of the West Bank, both legally and in practice.

"Settler violence and the acceleration of settlement projects have reached record levels, threatening the stability of the West Bank and violating international law," he stated. Macron reiterated France's commitment to a two-state solution.

Aid and Gaza Recovery

Macron also highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He stressed that "the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid across Gaza must be ensured under UN auspices, in full compliance with international humanitarian law."

In 2025, France will provide 100 million euros in humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip. This aid includes the delivery of additional food for children, medicine, and medical equipment.

France will participate in the Cairo Reconstruction Conference and help rebuild the Gaza healthcare sector, in collaboration with the French Development Agency (AFD) and the International Red Cross Committee.

Macron added that the stabilization of Gaza requires the redeployment of security forces and police of the Palestinian Authority to maintain order and security.

He also emphasized France's readiness to strengthen Palestine's security capacity through the EU mission, with more than 100 French security personnel to be deployed.

Palestinian Position and International Support

According to a report by France24, the meeting between Macron and Abbas took place a month after the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, following two years of war triggered by the attack of Palestinian armed groups on October 7, 2023.

Abbas expressed appreciation to several countries for their support. "We hold great appreciation for President Trump and the efforts he is currently making," he said.

He also thanked Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey for their efforts to strengthen the ceasefire, assist in humanitarian operations, and support the reconstruction of Gaza.

Abbas then emphasized that Gaza is an integral part of the Palestinian state under the sovereignty of the Palestinian Authority, including the management of transitional institutions and borders.

He also called upon countries that have not yet recognized Palestine to do so soon.

"We hope that the Palestinian people will one day celebrate the end of occupation, freedom, dignity, and independence," he said.

Abbas' visit to France is the first since Paris officially recognized the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly last September.
