TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French President Emmanuel Macron must appoint a new prime minister within 48 hours, the French presidency announced, as reported by Al Jazeera. The move comes as Macron struggles to navigate the most severe political crisis of his presidency.
The announcement followed consultations with party leaders who rejected Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s proposed cabinet, a plan intended to pull France out of the ongoing political deadlock.
The rejection ultimately led to Lecornu’s resignation.
Macron expressed gratitude to Lecornu for his efforts in handling the crisis, saying he appreciated his work “since Monday.” When asked whether he might return as prime minister, Lecornu told France 2 television, as cited by Anadolu Agency, “This evening, I consider my mission completed.”
Macron’s Next Challenge
Macron now faces a crucial decision that could determine the future of his government and its ability to pass the national budget.
According to Politico, the president must decide whether to dissolve the National Assembly and call for new elections or appoint another prime minister — who would face the same struggle of governing without a parliamentary majority.
One option is to choose a center-left figure from the Socialist Party, though this could threaten Macron’s previous reforms, including the controversial increase in the retirement age.
Another option, increasingly discussed in political circles, is Macron’s own resignation—a scenario championed by opposition figures such as Marine Le Pen.
“I vote against everything,” Le Pen told Al Jazeera. “The problem with our political leaders today is that they get on the horse not to go somewhere, but for a rodeo.Their idea is "how long can I hold on while the horse tries to throw me off?"”
Why Lecornu Resigned
Lecornu, the fifth prime minister under Macron’s presidency, was appointed in September to form a new government following the resignation of François Bayrou.
However, his proposed cabinet quickly drew criticism from both the left and right for retaining too many members from the previous administration. His effort to shift away from his predecessor’s approach failed to win support from any major bloc.
The deadlock over cabinet formation and the lack of consensus ultimately forced Lecornu to step down, leaving Macron once again searching for a leader capable of steering France through its deepening political turmoil.
