TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Defense Minister of France Sebastien Lecornu on Monday, October 21, 2024, warned Lebanon that civil war could break out and paralyze the Middle Eastern country that has now become a battleground between Israel and the armed group Hezbollah in recent weeks.
Lebanon is a country that was once led by France in the 21st century. In an interview with LCI news channel, Lecornu said a ceasefire in Lebanon is necessary for collective security.
Israel and Hezbollah have sporadically exchanged fire since the attack on October 7, 2023. Hezbollah's attack was in retaliation for Israel's attack on Gaza. Israel has escalated its military campaign against Hezbollah since September 2024 by launching the Northern Arrows operation to target Hezbollah members hiding in southern Lebanon.
UN data shows that tens of thousands of Lebanon residents have been forced to leave their homes in Lebanon for shelter. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported around 2,500 people killed in Israel's attacks on Lebanon as of Saturday, October 19, 2024.
"Our position at the moment is driven by the fear of an imminent civil war in Lebanon. You can see a deeper collapse than ever before," Lecornu said.
Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron called on the United States and the European Union to stop sending weapons to Israel. Macron emphasized the need for a political solution to end the crisis in the Middle East and warned that Lebanon could turn into another Gaza.
France will host a conference to address tensions in Lebanon on Thursday, October 24, 2024, in Paris. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the conference aims to garner international support for the people of Lebanon through emergency aid and seek ways to support several institutions in Lebanon, especially in terms of armament. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has indicated in the conference that his country needs security assistance or related military and internal security forces.
