TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia for Climate Change and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, ensures that the Indonesian Pavilion serves as a collaborative space at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Brazil. Through soft diplomacy, the Indonesian delegation aims to showcase various initiatives for mitigation and adaptation, such as carbon trading, forest conservation, and bilateral cooperation with other countries and international institutions.

"Indonesia comes not only with commitments, but with concrete actions. From tropical forests, clean energy transition, to carbon economy strengthening, we actively contribute to a more resilient earth," Hashim said in a written statement on Tuesday, 11 November 2025.

The global climate conference was officially opened on Monday, 10 November. The opening of this international agenda also marked the leadership relay from Azerbaijan to Brazil. In hard diplomacy, Indonesia is actively involved in seven key negotiation agendas, including the Global Stocktake, National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), Just Transition, and the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA).

Minister of Environment and Forestry, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, stated that COP30 is a momentum to prove that green development can benefit the country. "Indonesia builds leadership from concrete actions, not just promises," he said.

During the opening ceremony, COP30 President Andrea Corra do Lago affirmed Brazil's optimistic spirit and its continued global leadership in confronting climate change. His speech emphasized that COP30 should be remembered as the COP of Truth, a meeting based on science and upholding integrity in every decision.

"Science, education, and culture have shown us how humans build civilization. In confronting climate change, multilateralism is the way," Andrea confidently stated, continuing his speech.

Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Simon Stiell, reminded conference participants of the global promises made a decade ago in Paris. The world aims to reduce emissions to save the Earth's future. He depicted the Amazon River as a metaphor for the interdependent global ecosystem. Just as the Amazon thrives on thousands of supporting elements, the success of COP implementation depends on cross-sector collaboration among countries and communities.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also launched a Call for Action with three main pillars. First, all countries are called upon to uphold their commitments by formulating and ambitiously implementing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), supported by adequate means of implementation. The second action is to strengthen the political status of the climate issue by establishing a Climate Council directly linked to the United Nations General Assembly. Lastly, placing society at the center of the world climate agenda to ensure that global warming does not push millions of people back into poverty and hunger.
